Cookie Policy

Effective 29 August 2026 · Last updated 17 September 2026

This Cookie Policy explains the cookies and browser storage Vessbook uses, why we use them, and how to control them. It supplements our Privacy Policy.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. We also use similar browser storage technologies, such as local storage, for the same purposes. Vessbook uses these technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and support core platform functionality.

Types we use

Strictly necessary

Required

Required to keep you signed in, protect your session, and know who you are on each request. Your authentication token is stored both as a cookie and in local storage; the associated refresh token and cached profile live in local storage. These last up to 7 days, so closing the tab or the browser leaves you signed in when you come back, and signing out clears all of them immediately. Without these, you cannot stay signed in. These never require consent and are not affected by your cookie preferences below.

Examples: vessbook_token (cookie + local storage, 7 days), vessbook_refresh_token (local storage), vessbook_user (local storage)

Functional (local storage)

Optional

Used to remember your preferences and working state between visits — your saved clause shelf, dashboard/deal filters, dismissed announcements, and a short-lived cache of vessel positions used by the fleet map. None of this is shared with third parties. (Desk tool calculator history and mock trades are saved to your account on our servers, not to local storage, so they follow you across devices.)

Examples: clause shelf, dashboard filters & dismissed announcements, vessel position cache (AIS)

Analytics

Optional

We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how the platform is used — which pages are visited, general usage patterns, and site performance. This is separate from the cookie-less, first-party page-view counter described below, which runs regardless of your choice here. Google Analytics only sets cookies and starts collecting once you accept this category in the cookie banner or Cookie Preferences; until then it runs in a denied, cookie-less state via Google's Consent Mode.

Examples: _ga, _ga_<container-id>

Marketing

Optional

Used to measure ad performance and, where enabled, show you relevant ads based on a previous visit (retargeting) — for example through Google Ads, Meta (Facebook/Instagram), or LinkedIn. Like Analytics, these only run once you accept this category; not every platform listed here is necessarily active at a given time, but all are gated the same way if and when they are.

Examples: Google Ads remarketing, Meta Pixel (_fbp, _fbc), LinkedIn Insight Tag (li_sugr, bcookie)

Third-party / embedded

Optional

Set or loaded by third-party services embedded in the platform, such as map tiles (CARTO), live vessel position data (AIS), and market price indicators. Governed by each provider's own privacy practices, not this policy.

Examples: CARTO map tiles, AIS vessel position data, Market price data

How we ask for consent

On your first visit, a banner asks you to Accept All, Reject non-essential, or Customize a choice for each optional category above (Strictly necessary is never asked, since it is required to use the platform at all). Nothing in the Analytics or Marketing categories runs until you accept it — both start in a denied state via Google's Consent Mode, and Meta/LinkedIn scripts do not load at all until Marketing is accepted. Your choice is remembered for about 12 months, after which you will be asked again.

You can change your mind at any time via the Cookie Preferences link in the footer of any page, which reopens the same banner. Turning a previously-accepted category off will reload the page to make sure any script that had already loaded is fully cleared, not just paused.

Managing cookies and local storage

You can also manage or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time, and can clear local storage via your browser's site data settings. Disabling strictly necessary cookies or clearing local storage used for authentication will sign you out and may affect platform functionality. Clearing functional local storage will reset saved preferences and locally cached data but will not delete records already saved to your account on our servers.
