Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index
Meaning
EEXI is the IMO's one-off technical efficiency standard for existing ships, in force since 2023, often met by limiting engine power.
EEXI explained
Unlike CII, EEXI is a design rating, not an annual operational one. Many older tankers complied by fitting an engine power limitation, which reduces their maximum speed and can matter for charterers who need speed.
