FuelEU Maritime
Meaning
FuelEU Maritime is an EU rule, in force since 2025, that caps the greenhouse gas intensity of energy ships use on EU voyages and tightens over time.
FuelEU Maritime explained
The limit starts 2% below a 2020 baseline in 2025 and steps down to 6% in 2030 and much deeper reductions later. It applies to the same voyage scope as the EU ETS. Ships that exceed the limit pay a penalty, while ships that beat it can bank or pool their surplus.
Like the ETS, the obligation is on the ship's company, so charters need clauses on who bears the cost or benefit.
